Although she is not alone in the picture, the girl in the middle is very much alienated from the rest of the group, which is also alienated from each other. Instead of the community represented in statues or artwork such as the Chartres Cathedral (1225) where the statues are presented talking with one another, everyone in this picture is absorbed in their own little world, separated by various forms of technology. Also, like the Greek riace warrior (440 B.C.), the girl standing in the middle has an air of confidence and power, demonstrated by her posture and the way in which she faces the viewer directly.

Taking a step back, the first thing my eyes are drawn to is the face of the girl in the middle, framed not only by a picture frame, but also by light. In the elegant black dress and the ornate mask, she holds the frame, presenting a picture of herself to the world the way she would like to be seen-- beautiful, confident, and in control. The mask, however, suggests that this picture of herself is not who she really is. Yet as she grips the picture frame tightly, with both hands, we can see that this false picture of herself is what she is putting her identity in. Although she tries hard to present a perfect picture, the frame is tilted just enough to suggest that she might not be as perfect as she seems.

  1. This is absolutely stunning. Love it! The juxtaposition between the girl in the mask and the other unmasked people embroiled in their technology is great. Excellent feeling of isolation.

  4. Beautifully done. The isolation is really apparent, and I love what you said about the girl framing only what she wants others to see, even though it might not be the reality.

Eeeee! So striking! I love it. :)

  5. it would be interesting to photoshop all the area in the frame around her head completely white as to eliminate the background from the framed area altogether, making an even stronger point to what i think you're trying to convey. BUT DO WHAT YOU WILL, im a major proponent for free will

  7. this makes me think of what walls and images i have built up around myself. it makes me look at myself and see if how i am portraying myself is really the true me. i love how all the people are doing their own thing. i think it shows how our culture is becoming almost alienated due to technology and our busy lives.

  9. shooooot. this is fantastic. the commercial look is definitely effective. i dont love the girl on the front right as i find her a bit distracting, but other than that i dont have any complaints. there's a lot of nice details here and i would love to see more photos in this sort of series.

  10. this photo is striking. i really love the idea of the masquerade-esque mask as the focal point of the photo. it makes me wonder who the person is behind the mask, and why the people around her don't seem to notice or really care.
